YafaRay is a free open-source raytracing engine. Raytracing is a rendering technique for generating realistic images by tracing the path of light through a 3D scene. A render engine consists of a "faceless" computer program that interacts with a host 3D application to provide specific raytracing capabilities "on demand". Blender 3D is YafaRay main host application at the moment. The YafaRay engine is released under the LGPL 2.1 license. You can download YafaRay binaries and the source code in the downloads section.

Shadow Work

YafaRay 0.1.5 is a key maintenance release which includes important improvements and fixes for long-standing issues such as sampling errors recurrence (black & white dots), new vertex normal calculation for better raytracing on high poly, improved materials behaviour and a better Blender compatibility.

Rodrigo Placencia (Darktide), David Bluecame and Pedro Alcaide (Povmaniac) are the main contributors to this important release. Thanks to Gabriele Ferreri (megasoft) and Jens Verwiebe for these builds:

Be sure "Transparent background" is off to get correct YafaRay backgrounds on the Blender compositor. Enjoy it as much as we do making it!

Blender 2.64 is now using Color Management tools with sRGB enabled by default. It means that Blender will always expect a linear input from YafaRay, which means YafaRay Gamma Output should be equal to 1. This is essentially more correct if we are passing HDR data over the Blender compositor for edition. With this workflow, Blender will always show and edit YafaRay renders correctly on the compositor (Nodes and Image Viewer) and will save both OpenEXR and 8-bits YafaRay works with the correct gamma applied each: 1 and 2.2 respectively. Therefore we believe this is the best course of action.

Since Color Management with sRGB wiil be default in Blender from now on, future releases of the YafaRay exporter should have default Gamma Output changed to 1, in order to spare unnecessary confusion to our users. The issue has been reported at http://www.yafaray.org/node/547. In the mean time, you should just change YafaRay Gamma Output = 1 in your yafworks when Blender 2.64 Color Management is enabled.
