Architectural Visualization Challenge

Post Sun Dec 20, 2009 10:04 pm

A architectural challenge has just been launched, with significative prizes - It is hosted in the following url:
http://www.ronenbekerman.com/challenges ... -gh-house/

The scene for the challenge is provided, maybe some of you want to give it a try using the YafaRay engine.

It states that group efforts are not wanted. Suggested I understood the rules correctly, the only thing we could do:

1. start a thread (or subforum)
2. Everyone who participates starts his thread
3. pics are not allowed to posted there (only links)
4. Every participants composes his posts according rules and posts it 1 day in advance on here before he posts on the official thread (without pics - see rules)
5. Everyone of us adds his c&c as well as additional suggestions

For the competition all I can see is an extensive use of water and glass when using yafaray. Since yafaray shines exactly here.

Scene suggestions I come up with so far:
a. outside a Japanese stone garden
b. inside out shot of a "Japanese old style room" - getting the merge of the architectural style with Japanes art right as well as materials will be tricky - in case you are bold, you might add 2 Kendo fighters
c. crime scene (no kidding - dont think many come up with that) - a lot of broken items, stuff laying around,... to get this right a huge set of skill is needed
d. winter scene with a lot of snow - getting the snow right on surrounding trees gotta be tricky. For some "action" one might wanna model some kids playin in the snow outside
e. "ballroom" - a noble festivity - a lot of noble cars outside, men in suits, women in evening wardrobe, champagne, wine,... buffet, servants in livree - all that in the afternoon or at sunset
f. maritime coast - close to the coast, maybe atop a cliff, the ocean wild with huge waves (there are some decent hints for creating the "perfect wave" on the ILM and pixar website - ofc some surfers riding the perfect wave).

Edit g. "yafaray/Blender party" all the yafaray geeks meet for a legendary party at that house :D

If someone likes these suggestions - please make sure your the only yafaray participant who "makes" it - therefore post here and in a potential new forum or thread, that you do. So others know the "scene" is taken.

Hi, guys!

This challenge is interesting indeed and I have considered to participate (with yafaray, ofcourse). But there's one thing bothering me.

Since all the major sponsors are producers of licensed 3D software and this challenge is aimed to promote that software (to some extent), what are the possibilities that projects made entirely with opensource software will get the same fair trial as the "others"?

For example in the rules is stated: The sponsors of this Challenge may use short-listed and winning artwork for marketing purposes in the context of the Challenge. If I would work in the PR section of those companies, I wouldn't boast around that some free software won the contest that I sponsored and neither that it came near to the top ones.

Of course prizes are not the only thing worth competing for, there's also self-promotion, but (if I ignore the fun involved in doing it) that too is tied to the ranking you get.

So, what do you (as users of opensource software) think, it's worth bothering wit this one?

Don't be bothered my fried! Feel free to join in - you are on the same page as all the rest even if you use yafaray. I'll be head judge of this event and trust me when I say you will get fair chance as well as all the others.

The sponsors will obviously only use images created with their own software. But I will be posting and promoting the Challengers all over as much as I can. I got initial confirmation for an article to be published in 3D World Magazine after the challenge is over... and I also plan to publish a Challenge Book in the end showcasing all those who submitted final images (sure, the winners will get more coverage but that is only fair)

So... All you need to do now is enter and start working :D

Well, thank you for your promptly response - I surely didn't expect to get one from the organizer himself! :D

I have some ideas for the setup and will probably enter the competition in the next days.

Great images.

Unfortunatly there isn't any proposal with yafaray :( :(
I think it would be possible to achive same results made with 3ds+v-ray just using blender and yafaray
Dont you agree?
I think its just a matter of talent, knowledge and time. Not software.
Anyway, great contest.

I would love it if Yafaray users will join the next challenge - the main thing is the architectural visualization, not the tools you use... next time i'll add more categories to the mix so it will be more interesting!

Cheers
