yafaray stability

Post Thu May 07, 2009 3:38 pm

Hi guys

many of my students are mentioning that yafaray crashes quite often.
Both on OS X and Win.

The usability of the software is very good, simple and easy to use,
however the crashes seem to discourage them.

I also experience from time to time a crash as well.

I'm pretty sure they not random crashes but bugs, which is another different thing.

Is there a list with official bugs?

Sometimes I need to play with the scene to make it render.
To bad that there are no official error messages.

On windows I also get often a Microsoft.NET Framework error which
quits Yafaray.

Claas

There is a new bugtracker here, we are trying to keep it maintained and to give feedback to every report filled.

Please report your bugs as well

I experience these same issues. Sometimes, the stability of Blender is compromised by simply grabbing an object, moving it and then using the undo command while the Yafaray UI is running in the script window. I'm not sure how that particular bug could be tracked. I'm using Mac OSX. Is there some way of looking at a Python terminal window while this happens? If Yafaray isn't issuing an actual Python command simply while grabbing and moving an object with a general Blender operation, I'm not sure if this can be tracked. I don't normally have an issue with the undo command while running Blender alone.

Programming is not my forte, so maybe someone could enlighten me here with bug tracking. I do plan on learning Python this year, but not in time to help myself with my immediate issues. I do notice that most of my Yafaray rendering specific crashes occur while trying to use Photon mapping. Direct Lighting w/AO is much more stable in a general sense (for me).

One of my crashes occurs consistently while trying to use Photon mapping with a Blend material and transparency. It works fine in Direct Lighting, albeit very slow—even on an 8-core machine with 10 GB of ram. I just submitted this to the bug tracker along with the associated file. When I do get Photon mapping to work with non-blended materials, most of my renders that include glossy materials are full of the black squares/pixels.

Yafaray otherwise has been great, and you can't beat it being free, however, once these issues are fixed it will be even better.

I have a crash when I enable "Transparent Shadow" option.
I've sent it to Bugtracker.
