Comparison BI - Yafaray - Cycles

Hi guys!
Trying to compare those renderers with an exterior archiviz. First step with Yafaray ( PM - 4 mn rendering)

nice beginning, and will be interesting to watch some examples differences and similaritys of these renders.

Nice comparison here too Rio!
Sincere thanks! :D

It's very interesting to see BI having that nice result. But at same time surprises me the sampling noise on a BI render...
The Yafa one is as we all know very nice on PM. Sunset exteriors with lamps work very well with PM. Sampling is always very well done.
It will be a dificult test on cycles speed because of the small light sources but i can't wait to see your results.

I totally agree on your love for the three renders! :)
One more thing:
- Don't you miss a deph shadow color like in vray for example? (It would improve the black of the curtains...) None of these three renders have them...

Thanks !
Not really finished but a good update with Yafa:

P.S.: I really don't know how to use Vray :(

You must be joking! :D
You know everything needed.
Its just a bunch of more flexible features...and a few increase in speed without noise but washing out details... Anyway your yafaray renders are absolutly perfect. You don't "need to learn" how to use vray.
You make the difference. Not the software.
Yafaray is perfectly capable for rendering any scene. Maybe not so fast, maybe not so flexible, but much easier and simple to configure. And the time diference is really small.
And the team is really nice for the community!

I was just saying that when we don't have enought raydeph the transparent or reflective objects become black. In other commercial renders there is a nice feature that enable us to choose another color. In your case I would choose a dark brown for the curtains...That makes the render engine much more flexible.
But perhaps I am the only one thinking about this because I never saw anyone complaining about it...

Thanks Arquitecto !
Here the final result with Yafaray ( I guess)

Nothing definitive until the comparison is stopped, I can change some things with your C&C !

Very nice.
Could you share the rendertime too, please?
And maybe other things that are special, like what have you to fake, did you use nodes and stuff like that.

Thanks Malo ! Rendering time:
_Yafa: 18mn
_BI: 12mn
_Cycles: 9mn

and here, first result with Cycles:

Cycles-01+compo.jpg

I use nodes-compositing to improve color correction, vignetting, fog,... the same post-production for each renders.

Interesting results...:D

Rio, you have probably noticed the difference in shadows accuracy on the cycles render. The shadows look blurred to much... Nonetheless, the yafaray shadows are extremely sharp...
Could that be related to the lamps size you use on each version?

At the same time trees are sharper on yafa and BI. Cycles trees seem noisy. Do you beleive that if you waited a bit more this would be more sampled?

I assume Cycles was rendered in GPU, right? Can you share graphic card specs?
The times comparison is very important but yafa and blender rely on CPU instead. Can you share cpu and ram specs?

Once again, thank you very much for sharing this work! :D
We can learn a lot!

Hi guys !

I think I have finished the comparison. In summary:

_Hardware spec.
intel i7-2600k ( 3,4GHz), 16 Go DDRam, Nvidia GTX 460 1GoRam ( 336 cuda cores), windows7 64bits. Yafaray & BI rendering processed with 4 cores CPU, Cycles render on GPU. Made with official Blender 2.63a-64bits & official Yafaray 0.1.2 beta5a-64bits.

The goal is not to get the same renderings but to observe what happen when you switch between the three methods, with the less changes of settings as possible ( only shaders & lights). The three renderings have almost the same post-compositing based on the BI passes ( blender nodes, color correction, vignetting, fog effect,...). The scene is not really complex ( a simple snow ground, basic architecture, few furnitures,...), the shaders are not sophisticated. The forest is made with a particle system and only one birch tree made with slaping add-on.

Here the scene:
