You can fake it by duplicating and scaling the object, then applying slight transparency and/or translucency:-

This is a basic start for the final run of your project. I would work a bit more on the particles area, now the distribution seems too regular. Can you show us a real photograph of this insect. Also what are you lighting settings?

I would work on a more dense random particles distribution, by mixing several particles systems, of diferent size and density.
