Out of contest - Cryo´s submission

Post Mon Jul 04, 2011 1:47 pm

Well guys i sure hope you will be able to squash...haem.. render a few good bugs! :)

In the meantime, if it is permitted to make out of contest submissions , i´ll be taking my chances on the Childhood toys subject.
I´ve been looking for an adequate toy to focus, this is my pick so far :

If anyone as other sugestions, do post them, since the decision as not been made yet. ;)

Modeling the main body

Post Tue Jul 05, 2011 3:58 pm

I forgot to mention the programs i´m gonna use to tackle this:
Blender (for Modeling) ; Inkscape and Guimp for Textures;

I´ve been messing around with the main body of the rocket and here are some preliminary images:

Sculpt.JPG
Main Body

The body seems to be made primarily with two halves.Currently working on a quarter of the rocket, i´m using referenced duplicates with mirroring until i join everything.

What material is this toy made of? It seems like sheet metal.

Yup! i guess it is folded tin or similar type of alloy, the artwork would be printed before punching into a press, if you notice it has dented holes (inserts) where the sheet is supposed to be fixed. no weldings on this!

Here´s another update :

Modelling...

For the background i´ve been thinking of using a stone niche/window combo , with a dusted glass and iron bars (sort of illumination on a basement ), perhaps a small spider with complementary web.
It all depends on how the main subject evolves.

And another update!... i´m having trouble with the folded pads.I don´t know if giving them thickness will increase the realism, or if it is relevant for the final result (I´m talking about the small wing right next to the nose).

Here is another update.I figured i could use an old attic setting :

Anyways i am not happy with the results so far as it is quite noisy. i am having difficulty to improve the results.I´m also working on an alternative scenario (window sill):

You should lower the reflection strength & exponent for the rocket material. This will also produce less "fireflies".

And some more texturing is in order :)

And another,...
This time i´ve added the tail texture, and used the same material settings on the diferent parts of the rocket:

Direct lighting.. dunno if i´m gonna update it more, i´ve lost will with the outcome result.

I´ve been rendering at work , because at home it would take an eternity to generate one image :P

It's looking better now that is textured (dirt). A few minor issues:

- The bump on the rocket is too strong. You could also decrease specular intensity & exponent of the metal material a bit (look at the reference).
- The bump intensity on the wooden frame is also a bit exaggerated.
- Maybe work some more on the wood texture (quality, scale & UV mapping)
- 1/1 box sampling gives lousy quality. You should use gauss or mitchell with something like 2 samples main pass + 2 adaptive samples & 4 or more adaptive passes. This will also clear that few small fireflies.

(I'm referring to your last render)

Thanks for your comments Mo, they sure come in handy.
The goal here would be to blur the image, just enough to add the nostalgia.
The final render would look more like the first image on my previous post.Comments would be also welcome on this subject.

ps: i will also try to dent the rocket a bit more...

+1 with what Mo said. Also, how big is the actual toy? In the render it seems really big when you compare it with the size of the rail.

Are you doing the depth of field blur in Yafaray? Maybe I'm wrong but in my experience it's easier and less noisy to render a depth map in blender and use it to blur your render in post.
