I second Samo's opinion and arguments.
I also add:
Quality has improved a lot in the last contests.
Demonstrating yafaray possibilities with Sintel scenes can prove yafarays importance on the Blender Comunity, wich has been a strategic place for a yafaray.
I see Samo as the boss of dedication, inspiration, work and is allways pushing this magnific project to another level.

It's a good idea to have the choice between animations and stills. And use the Sintel files lets the participants to concentrate on the rendering, which fits perfectly with Yafaray.

The only thing that is bothering me is that Sintel files are based on Blender 2.5 Render branch. As far as I know, currently, the Yafaray exporter for 2.5 is still on progress, and just for Windows and Linux. So will the 2.5 exporter be ready before the contest?

Can Sintel files be opened with Blender 2.49? For our purpose we only need meshes and rigging. I'm more concerned about use of scene apending in production files and final scene sizes.

a better option is to import objects from 2.5 to 2.49

I'm not sure if 2.5 animation data translates successfully to 2.49.

I haven't tested, but I think I remember reading this is one area that 2.5 is not fully backwards compatible. It might be a case of try it and see.....

i'm afraid animation data wont work. Even between 2.53 to 2.55 you need to run a script to translate the animation (FCurve/Driver 2.54 fix entry from the Help menu)

Does the YafaRay 2.5 exporter works in the Blender branch included in the DVD?

I can open a 70 MG Sintel scene with the latest release of Blender (2.55), with my rather shitty computer, with no problems whatsoever.

I think the real issue here is getting to finish a working YafaRay exporter for Blender 2.55. Blender looks now like heading for a stable release.

And releasing a RC of YafaRay 0.1.2 with support for linked data and instances, as the Blender 2.5 exporter is meant to work with Yafaray 0.1.2.

All multiplatfom, so OSX users can participate as well.

I guess these should be the minimuns for this contest to go.

Hello!

I haven't been around here for quite a while now, but I'm interested to see how Yafaray has changed! I think a rendering competition is an excellent idea, however limiting it to Sintel content isn't my favorite idea :)

Could someone point me in the direction of a recent CVS build (or stable one) as well as the proper method for using it with Blender 2.49b or 2.5? I would just like to give it a spin, kick the wheels, so to speak...

Awesome images around here! Can't wait to try it out.

By the way, I think my old login has fried so I suppose I'll be using this one.

The minimums for this contest to go, at least with the proposed format (using Sintel files), are not met yet. Minimums are a finished truly multiplatform Blender 2.5 exporter.

If you wish, in the meatime till the exporter is finished, we can organise a contest based of a topic choosen by the community. I would like proposed two topics:

  • Vintage
  • Insects

I would like to hear your ideas as well. If we put together a good list of topics, I will make a pool to choose among them. The Sintel contest will be done as well as soon as we have the exporter finished, both with prizes.
