24bit Jpegs for HDR Texture

Post Tue Sep 08, 2009 4:36 am

I do alot of architectural renderings, and I have purchased a collection of HDR skys to use in lighting my projects and providing the background texture. The collection came as partially as 360 degree format, and hemispherical formats. The other odd thing about them is they came as 24 bit jpegs not HDR or EXR images. Will yafaray still render these as background textures just as well as an HDR or EXR format? Or is there a way I can just convert them?

Thanks,

Ryan

24 bit jpegs

Does exist such a thing? Maybe is this format:

Anyway I believe you should export them to either EXR or HDR to use them in YafaRay. There seems to be photoshop plugins.

You should ask them for more information on your purchase, since JPEG XR isn't a widespread format.

Well, in YafaRay you need HDR or EXR. 8 bits JPG can't for sure.
I curious about what you have been sold. Can you post an example?

Looking at it further, I actually just bought JPG sky textures.

What I meant to buy the HDR pack from the same website.

JPEG 24 bits is the normal JPEG with 8 bit per channel (8 bit Red, 8 bit Green, 8 bit Blue... the standard 8 bit jpeg). In your case you bought regular JPEG at super hyper high resolution :).
There is a trick to convert JPEG in EXR using Qtpfsgui and Gimp but it´s not the same as a real EXR
here is the link to the tutorial

They have been a great help, and have allowed me to change my purchase from the skys to their HDR pack. Yeah for HDR images!
