Improved blender material reading?

Post Tue May 12, 2009 9:17 pm

Hi guys,

I don't know if it has been asked before (I tried searching for it without much success), but as you know, Yafaray's material editor only recognizes the names of the materials you create in blender's, but not its properties, so you still gotta set its type to diffuse, phong or glass, plus all the extra fine-tuning you require in Yafaray's material UI. I'd like to know if at least the basic properties like diffuse color, specularity (a spec of 0 would be diffuse, anything above it would be phong) and creating a blender "glass" material could be transferred directly to Yafaray's material editor. A bit like blendigo's exporter, that transfers the basic material properties from one UI to the other. I think it would speed things up a bit. ;)

Has it been discussed?

Surprisingly, this has already been discussed (not just once). Here is the latest bit of it:

This post and the one after.

Thanks bert, you're right. After looking some more I ran into some info about this inquiry ;) , precisely the one you're linking in the "bye bye yafray" thread.
I'm re-checking it to see what the state of it may be :)

But have the devs mentioned anything about it? (officially or semi-officially?)

Thanks for replying and for the link.

ps. The "Convert all materials from Blender" option sounds cool. It's how other 3d packages do it when having to integrate external render engines (i.e. 3dsmax with final render or vray). ;)

Not only they have it but also LuxRender.

Lux has a convert button which copies all properties (besides z-depth) and puts
that into Lux Material trees.

But I do not think that the current system is so bad in Yafaray.
Textures are all copied one to one.
Only material (diffuse - specular - reflection - refraction) have to be re-created.
Blender has a different material approach as yafaray.

I agree with you Cekühnen. The yafaray material settings are all in one place instead of being hided in several tabs in blender.
What i wish is an option to save and load yafray materials (basic settings without textures).
Thanx!
