Activity #1: Studio lighting of a Car

I hate to drag up an old topic, but I've scoured Google and haven't found anything more recent.

I'm looking to create a studio scene much like the entries for this contest here. I come from a 3D Studio Max background where setting such a scene up involved using a 3rd party renderer and adjusting a few settings to create the scene. I've been working non-stop to try and duplicate the desired result in Yafray (in Blender) to no avail though. Does anyone have any tips or links to relevant tutorials?

Appreciate the help :)

in the first post of this thread are links about studio lighting, more of less they can be applied to yafray. One example is this scene by Kronos, (light bulbs):

http://www.zshare.net/download/26971706d68f32/

whose lighting setup is based on this tutorial:

if you post an screenshot of the scene maybe we can help you more.

This is where I'm at right now; I'm kind of happy with it, but I want to push it farther and make it a bit more photo-real (trying to mimick a car paint texture)

This is where I'd like to have it: (This shot is from 3D Studio Max)

dannisbet, the image you have posted is not a good example of studio lighting: flat lighting, boring camera composition and no interesting reflections. Visit any car manufacturer web page and you will see good examples of studio lighting. Also I recommend working with the two car models you have in the first missage, is what this thread is about.

Having no experience with studio rendering or cars I thought I should give this a go.

Here is my first try at the Bugatti:-

Image

I used a coated glossy material for the car paint and a sunsky background with two meshlights.

Here is try no. 2.

I added another meshlight, still with sunsky, but I'm thinking this wants an HDR background featuring mountains, so I may make another. I increased the reflectivity on the paint material, but I'm still not happy with it; I can't help thinking it should show some noise and more depth.

Post production done with Gimp - is it too warm?

come2me: I have just downloaded the Enzo. It will be some weeks before I can make a render with it as I just started something else, but I will try to find time for it.

stoneage, can you share how did you compose the render with the image?

Hi, I tried posting this morning, but there was a problem uploading the image.
I'm not sure if it answers the question, but it was all done in a single render, there was no post render compositing.

Or do you mean the background image? It is an image mapped to a plane.

The large slim cubes are meshlights.
If you need more information, I would be happy to help.
